Spinal Injuries

A traumatic injury that bruises or tears the spinal cord is known as an acute spinal cord injury. Approximately 500,000 people in the US suffer from the effects of a spinal cord injury (SCI) and there are about 10,000 new cases every year.

The most common causes of acute spinal cord injuries are falls, birth injuries, car accidents, sports injuries, diving accidents, trampoline accidents, and violence (stab or gunshot wounds).

The effects of an SCI depend on the location, type, and level of the injury. In general, the nerves above the injury site continue to function normally, and the nerves located at or below the injury do not. Thus, the higher the location of the injury, the more severe the effects. Victims of spinal cord injuries lose sensation and movement below the injury and may also experience changes in bladder and bowel function, sexual function, blood pressure, body temperature control, and ability to sweat below the injury.

Currently, there is no cure for spinal cord injuries, and the main goal of treatment is to prevent further injury. Acute spinal cord injury victims may require long-term hospitalization and rehabilitation; the high cost of this care can place an overwhelming burden on the victims and their families.

If you have suffered an acute spinal cord injury through the fault or negligence of another party, that person or entity may be financially responsible for the costs associated with your injury. To start the process of suing for compensation, you should contact an experienced attorney promptly; there may be a legal time limit on such lawsuits.
